From trainee paraplanner to Partner: Sophie Barnes' career journey

We spoke to Sophie Barnes about her journey from trainee paraplanner to Partner and Independent Financial Adviser, the lessons she has learnt and her advice for anyone considering a career in wealth management.

Eight years and 14 exams after joining Chattertons, Sophie manages a portfolio of around £50 million for approximately 100 clients. She explains how her career has developed and why learning and communication remain central to her work.

Sophie how did your career at Chattertons begin?

I joined Chattertons eight years ago as a trainee paraplanner, supporting advisers with research, reports and compliance — the work behind the advice. In 2022, I became a trainee adviser and continued my studies. Fourteen exams later, I gained my diploma and qualified as an Independent Financial Adviser.

What first attracted you to wealth management and to Chattertons?

While studying for a law degree, I spent a summer working at a wealth advisory practice and realised it was the career I wanted to pursue. Chattertons offered the best of both worlds: a firm spanning the legal and financial landscape, where I can bring together legal, wealth and tax advice for clients.

What has been your proudest achievement?

Last year, Albermarle Partners, our fund managers, invited me to speak at a Rising Stars event in London celebrating young finance professionals. It was daunting, but a fantastic experience. I’m also proud of the recognition I’ve received from the firm for my work and progress.

What is one thing your career has taught you?

You never stop learning. Even after qualifying, you must keep your knowledge current. Clear communication with clients is just as important.

What do you enjoy most about working at Chattertons?

The people and the opportunities that come from being part of a holistic team. Working across disciplines allows us to give clients genuinely joined-up advice.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in wealth management?

It is a rewarding career. My advice is to get started with the exams, maintain your momentum and see them through. The hard work is worth it.

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?

I like to keep fit, walk the dog, travel and spend time with friends and family.

Sophie’s journey shows what can be achieved through curiosity, commitment and continual learning. It also highlights the value of bringing legal, wealth and tax expertise together to give clients clear, joined-up advice.
