High Net Worth Investors Tier 1
The High Net Worth Investor visa (Tier 1 (Investor) visa) is a highly sought-after visa that allows individuals to move to the UK with their family to work, study or start a business without having a pass an English language test. The primary criteria are strict, requiring that you have funds of at least £2 million to invest into the UK economy. Clients often ask us…..
Who is eligible for a Tier 1 (Investor) visa?
The Tier 1 (Investor) visa is for people who are able to make significant financial investments in the UK. You are eligible for a Tier 1 (Investor) visa if:
- You have at least £2 million to invest in the UK
- You are from outside the European Economic Area (EEA)
- You can prove that the money belongs to you, your spouse, or unmarried or same-sex partner and evidence the source of those funds
- You have an account with a UK regulated bank to hold your funds
- The money must be free to spend in the UK
What is the process of applying for a High Net Worth investor visa?
UK Visas and Immigration (which is part of the Home Office and used to be called the UK Border Agency) is responsible for processing visa applications and making decisions about whether a person can enter the UK.
There are a number of documents you must provide with your application, including:
- Your passport or travel identification
- Your tuberculosis test results, if from a country where you must take a test
- A criminal record certificate from any country in which you have stayed for a total of 12 months or more over the last 10 years
You will also need to provide evidence of your investment funds, including proof of where the money came from (with specified documents being required if you have held the funds for less than 2 years), and evidence that you have a UK bank account with a regulated bank.
Upon applying for your Tier 1 (Investor) visa, you will need to provide fingerprints and a photograph for your biometric residence permit. This is typically done at a visa application centre and you must pick up your permit within 10 days of the date you arrive in the UK.
Our immigration lawyer can guide you through the entire process, ensuring that every stage is completed efficiently and to the highest degree of accuracy.
How long does it take to get a Tier 1 (Investor) visa?
The earliest you can apply for your visa is three months before you travel to the UK. If you are based outside the UK, it should take around three weeks from the date of application for your visa to be processed.
It is sometimes possible to pay for your visa application to be processed faster – this is called priority service (for a decision within five working days) or super priority service (for a decision within 24 hours).
How long can you stay in the UK on a Tier 1 (Investor) visa?
You can come to the UK for a maximum of three years and four months.
Can you extend a Tier 1 (Investor) visa?
You can extend your visa by two years by making a further application. One of the key requirements is that you invested a sum of at least £2 million in the UK within three months of your ‘investor start date’.
We have extensive experience advising High Net Worth individuals looking to extend their Tier 1 (Investor) status.
Can you bring your family to the UK on a Tier 1 (investor) visa?
Yes, dependants can join you, but must apply for their own dependent visa. Dependants can include:
- Your spouse or partner
- Your child under age 18
- Your child over age 18 if they are currently in the UK as dependant
Can you apply to settle in the UK on a High Net Worth investor visa?
Yes, the length of time you must wait before you can apply for settlement or indefinite leave to remain depends on how much you invest in the UK:
- five years if you invest £2 million
- three years if you invest £5 million
- two years if you invest £10 million
Dependants are unable to fast-track their route to indefinite leave to remain with the main applicant, other than in certain limited circumstances. Please contact us to review your particular circumstances.
