The Importance of Keeping your Will safe

  • Posted

You have made a Will; that is usually the hardest and most stressful part of the transaction completed and you can be safe in the knowledge that your assets are going to pass to your intended beneficiaries on your death. However, you now need to make sure that your Will is kept safe and your executors and family know where it is.

If on your death your family don’t know the whereabouts of your Will then there is a risk that they may not think that you have made one. They could start dealing with your estate and incurring expenses before your Will materialises. When you complete a Will with Chattertons, we provide you with a copy to keep with your paperwork. This should then be readily accessible to your family when they need it.

It is also extremely important that you ensure that your original Will is kept safe. If your original Will is lost it is still possible to prove a copy of the Will to the Probate Registry but it can be costly and time consuming. For all clients who make Wills with Chattertons, we offer a free service to keep your original Wills in storage at our offices so that you can be secure in the knowledge that they will remain in safe storage until such time as they are needed again.
